Pranayama an ancient yogic tradition is the practice of regulating and extending the breath to control the flow of prana within the body, enhancing physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.
Pranayama is a technique through which Prana in the body is activated to a higher frequency. By practicing Pranayama a certain amount of heat or creative force is generated throughout the entire body, influencing the existing quantum of Prana.

MEDICAL BENEFITS OF PRANAYAMA

There are several studies that show the medical benefits of Pranayama

One study showed improvement in pulmonary function tests in patients with asthma and emphysema after practicing yoga and Pranayama for 45 min a day over the course of two months

Several studies have supported Bhastrika Pranayama in enhancing “parasympathetic tone.”

Another study showed the long term benefits of Alternate Nostril Breathing in increasing parasympathetic tone by measuring heart rate variability and expiration-inhalation ratios

Pranayama also helps alleviate cancer-related fatigue and emotional distress, with patients reporting significant reductions in fatigue severity and negative emotions such as worry, anxiety, and frustration. These findings are consistent across various studies, indicating that Pranayama can manage the common side effects of cancer and its treatments .

In sum, Pranayama is accessible to all and can be used with meditation, or on its own, to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system leading us toward greater health and sense of well-being.

BENEFITS OF PRANAYAMA

One of the ways in which prana enters our body is through breathing. The way we breath goes a long way in deciding the quality and quantity of the prana we intake through breath.

The flow in the Nadis (psychic pathways) that carry prana is sluggish or blocked due to faulty or shallow breathing, faulty perception, imbalance in thoughts and emotions leading to various discomforts, diseases and various psychological conditions affecting inter-personal relations, social interactions etc.

Patanjali’s Ashthanga yoga talks about 8 steps towards liberation or moksha; Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahar, dhyana, Dharana and Samadhi.

Pranayama falls in the 4th level which helps to control the flow, quality and quantity of prana within the Nadis or pranic channels.
